Volunteering for FEMA

When natural disasters strike, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) handles the task of rebuilding and offering relief services to victims. FEMA is always searching for willing volunteers who can help the agency maximize its response time to those who are in need in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Your efforts can help them do their job more efficiently and help them fill their mandate of service. If you are looking to volunteer for FEMA, here are some things you can do to make it happen:

  • Get trained as a volunteer.

If you do not possess the right skills to become an effective FEMA volunteer, register on their website to get involved in a training program. FEMA offers several programs that will teach you the necessary skills and impart the knowledge needed to work for the agency.

  • Make yourself available.

Getting a foot in the door at FEMA can be as simple as taking personal responsibility. If you know of an area beset by a natural disaster in need of volunteers, be the first one to help. FEMA will often use volunteers already on the scene to help assist the agency in its relief operations.

  • Join other volunteer programs.

There are many other organizations that run disaster relief programs in partnership with FEMA. One such agency is the American Red Cross. You can find plenty of volunteer opportunities on their website. Another is the Citizen Corps. Their programs are usually focused on education and training to help people learn what to do when disaster strikes. It has a host of available volunteer opportunities on its website as well. Joining agencies like these can put you on the front lines with FEMA.

Charity Gives A True Sense Of Happiness

Every day people spend millions across the globe looking for happiness.  We buy movies, ornaments, books, alcohol and drugs, all in the search of happiness. It is the eternal quest for joy that drives the world forward. We buy and buy but we are never satisfied. It seems all the pleasures of the world, all the luxuries and all the comforts can’t satisfy our craving for more. Why is this? The reason is that most people are doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing to get true joy.

They spend more and more, in the hope that they can exchange the cash in their hand for happiness. They never realize that they can’t do that. The only real joy is in the joy of giving. Instead of using money for buying things, try giving it to someone who needs it to buy food or provide a roof over his or her children’s heads. That is true happiness. The feeling you get when you see someone else happy because of your help, that is the only kind of happiness that anyone can ever hope to have on this earth.

It is the same joy a mother has when she sees the child she raised reach great heights, it is the same joy a teacher has when he sees his student become someone greater than himself. That is the joy of giving. That is why charities are so important not only to the people receiving it, but to those who give it. It provides a helping hand to a desperate person who has no other hope and provides satisfaction that cannot be matched by any worldly pleasure to the person giving it.

Giving to a charitable cause gives you a true sense of happiness that stays in your heart even if your wallet is a little lighter.

Worldwide Charities

There are people all over the world that could benefit from a little charitable giving. In America, we have an excess of wealth compared to a lot of the countries out there, so why not share that wealth with those in desperate need of it?

First, there is the African Well Fund. This non-profit organization donates the money that they raise to Africare, who in turn uses the funds to build wells throughout Africa. You couldn’t imagine how little it takes to make a huge difference in someone else’s life. These low-cost wells provide villages with access to clean water, where they previously went without. It’s a small thing that we take for granted every single day, so why not help others obtain that same luxury.

Another great organization to donate to is the American Red Cross. The Red Cross not only helps people in America, but those all over the world who are victims of natural disasters, wars, and who are serving in the military. There are many different ways you can help the Red Cross. One unique way is by donating blood. You will literally be saving lives by donating your blood. It’s a quick and somewhat painless procedure that will give the gift of life to someone who has been hurt. They also respond to disaster situations, so emergency supplies like blankets, medical supplies, and other such items would be great to donate.

Lastly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints also does a lot of humanitarian work. You do not have to be a member of this church or have any certain beliefs, just the belief that you can help someone else in need. By donating clothing, blankets, furniture, and other household items to the Deseret Industries thrift stores, your donations will be sent not only to the U.S. stores, but to those in other countries that are in great need of supplies.
