Charity Donation 101

Donating to charities is a great way to share of your own wealth and give to those who are in real need of it. Here are some of the basics you should follow when donating to charities.

1. Make sure it’s legitimate
It’s sad to say, but there are loads of charity scams out there these days. So, before you give your money away, be sure that the charity is for real. Check them out online and ask around before you do anything.

2. Donate usable items
Now, I know you don’t want to give away designer label clothes or expensive furniture, but do make sure that the things you donate can actually be used by someone else. For instance, bulging cans of food are not safe for human consumption, so a food bank will not accept them. Clothes that are stained, ripped, or worn out really are not a benefit to someone else. Be sure to donate gently used, clean, and usable clothing or non-expired food, because charities are not your personal trash dump.
On a similar note, there are certain items that should only be donated if they are new. Personal items like underwear, socks, and bras shouldn’t be donated second hand.

3. Get a receipt
You may think that it’s silly, asking for a receipt for donating items. But, charitable donations are tax deductible! Second hand stores and shelters frequently give out receipts for donated goods, so they shouldn’t even bat an eye when you ask for one. So, you will not only be helping others, but you will be helping yourself as well!

4. Donate year round
Charities are heavily promoted during the holidays. It’s a hard time of year for a lot of people out there, so it’s a great time to be giving. But, charities need supplies and donations throughout the entire year as well. Give generously to those in need and donate the whole year through!

How to Help a Charity without Donating Money

Not everyone is as fortunate as Oprah, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, or the many other celebrities who donate large amounts of money to charities. It would be really nice to have the bank accounts they have and just write a check to help a charity, but this really isn’t a reality for most people. There are many different ways, however, to help a charity without donating money. Charities are happy with any amount they can get, so don’t feel bad if you can’t contribute as much as the celebrities because you can help in other ways.

One of the easiest ways to help a charity without donating money is to volunteer your time. Charities are always looking for individuals to volunteer and they will never tell you there is nothing to do. All you need to do is find a charity you are qualified to help and see what you can do. Donating your time is very beneficial to charities because time is money.

Another way to donate to charities without spending any money is to go through your home and round up all the items you no longer use. Many charities accept clothing and household item donations. Most people have closets full of toys, books, clothing, and other items they do not use, so why not donate them so others can benefit?

One way to donate to charities that a lot of people don’t think about is to purchase items at the store that match a certain amount of money to a charity when their product is bought. Product packaging will usually explain the details. Some charities make a good portion of their income in this fashion.

Be creative in the way you donate to charities. There are many different ways to contribute on the Internet. Some search engines are even designed to help you find the opportunities. It just takes a bit of extra effort to help out those who are less fortunate than yourself, and it doesn’t always require money either.

What Items Can Be Donated to Charity?

There are lots of charities that accept donations of tangible items. Some of these items include clothing, household items, and toys. Every charity has different requirements when it comes to accepting donated items. Check with the specific charity you are interested in donating to for specifics on their guidelines. The following is an overview of items that are generally accepted and rules for donations.

Clothing and Shoes

Most charities that collect clothing and shoes will accept all sizes and styles. Coats and jackets are particularly welcomed because they are generally higher priced items. Charities usually ask that clothing be clean and in good repair. Charities are not a place to get rid of your torn and worn out clothing. The donations should be in good enough repair to benefit the needy. Most charities request that underwear and socks not be donated for sanitary reasons, but most other clothing items are accepted. If there are no charities in your area that accept clothing donations, local consignment shops that sell clothing to people for a discounted price may also be willing to take them off your hands. Some communities have frequent clothing drives, so you can store the clothing you want to donate until a drive comes around.

Household Items

Some charities will accept household items in addition to clothing. Household items include everything from small appliances to furniture. Some charities may even be willing to come to your home to collect large items like furniture. Household item donations are important because they are given to people who have had to leave their residences in a hurry. This could be a person fleeing from an abusive situation or someone that has had to evacuate their home because of a natural disaster. Furniture is very expensive to replace, so donations are very much appreciated.

Toys and School Supplies

Many underprivileged kids do not have toys to play with or access to the school supplies they need. Some charities hold toy drives or put together school supply kits to give to children who need them. Buy a few extra items around back to school time and give them to charity.
